History
Harbor House: A Local Landmark
Originally built in 1925 as an Army and Navy YMCA, this stunning five-story Mediterranean Revival building is a piece of local history in San Pedro, CA. Designed by renowned architects Jay, Rogers & Stevenson, the building once housed a bustling community of soldiers and sailors, offering a gym, pool, coffee shop, cafeteria, dormitory, and even open-air handball courts. After serving the military, it transitioned to a civilian role as a nursing home in the 1940s and was recognized as a historic landmark in 1982.
San Pedro: A Maritime Legacy
Situated at the southern tip of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, San Pedro Bay has a rich history dating back to the 1540s when Spanish ships first arrived. Mission San Gabriel Arcángel played a vital role in supplying these vessels, setting the stage for San Pedro’s future as a major commercial hub. Today, San Pedro Harbor stands as one of the busiest ports in the world, second only to Hong Kong and Singapore.
